Are Genetically Modified Foods Really Bad For You?
There’s been so much negative hype lately in the media surrounding GE (Genetically Engineered) foods and whether or not they are good or bad for you. Everywhere you look it’s all about good organic this and bad GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) that. Here in America, we have such an abundance of food that it’s easy to get carried away with complaining about technological advances and the genetic changing of the foods we eat. In fact, we in the US throw away more food than any other country on earth. Not every country has that luxury though. Recently, environmental groups have been launching smear campaigns left and right attacking what a Nobel Peace Prize winning scientist created almost 40 years ago and what is credited with saving billions of peoples lives to date, and that is the process of genetically modifying plant crops and creating hybrids.
Mainstream media spews negative myth after myth regarding GE foods. Things like animal genes being used in GMO’s and GE crops being commercially released into the environment without testing are all common things that are constantly said by the naysayers. But how much of this stuff really is true, and how much of it is only myth? By helping you to understanding some of these unknowns and putting to bed some of the myths I hope to show that using GE foods is a good thing and not a bad thing. After all, here at Expect Attitude we’re all about pondering the truth and exposing injustice. This story has a little bit of all that and more…
Opposing Arguments Are Easy To Make On A Full Stomach
In 2011, 19,000 kids under age 5 died every single day around the world from hunger. Let that sink in for a moment or two. Now add in another 6,000 adults, and that’s 25,000 people dying every 24 hours. That’s equal to a small city here in America… Gone in only 1 day every day. One hunger related death every 3.3 seconds. I am going to repeat this one fact again, because it is worth repeating over and over. This happens EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMN DAY!!! That’s over 7 1/2 million people per year. Millions more go to bed starving every night. It’s super fucking important to know that when debating this subject. People are currently dying because there is not enough food to feed them all.
In the late 60’s and early 70’s, an amazing agricultural scientist named Norman Borlaug started studies into genetically modifying wheat and applied those efforts to crops in Mexico, and later parts of Africa, Asia and more. He is the grandfather of genetically altering plants. His findings have been applied to multiple different types of crops now. Through his efforts, it is believe he saved over 1 billion people from dying of starvation in only a few short decades. That is a pretty amazing achievement for a single person to accomplish.
So you say “I’m not gonna eat some fuckin frakenstein type foods!”. This statement is made without an understanding of just what a genetically modified food really is. Understanding this is the beginning of the path to acceptance. It’s simply crops which have been altered in the lab so that they can produce higher yields per acre and are able to thrive in some of the harshest climates on earth. They take a good plant and over the course of generations make it better. I’m not a scientist, and do not pretend to understand the specifics, but that’s the jist of it. This is a great page to read to get a more in depth look at exactly what is going on.
The environmentalists that oppose these foods often do it on full bellies and with little knowledge of what is true or not. I’m sure none of them truly know what it’s like to go to bed starving and on the brink of death or live day to day with severe malnourishment. Mr. Borlaug once said “You can’t build a peaceful world on empty stomachs and misery”. GE crops are a start in that direction. If you’re the hippie sort and all about world peace, you are never going to achieve it with shortages of food. In essence opposing the advancement of foods through genetic engineering is opposing world peace. HA! Gotcha! Fuck you hippies!!!
Without these sort of scientific advances in engineered foods, there is no way to feed the entire world’s population, which continues to grow at the crazy rate of around 80 million people every year. That is a fuck-load of people that need to be fed. Unfortunately the humanitarian efforts contributed by great agricultural scientists are constantly undermined by this bullshit negative environmentalist rhetoric. Some of these sorts actually talk about resorting back to old school caveman types of methods for farming and doing away with all the scientific advancements. Say what?!? That’s batshit crazy talk right there yo…
Organic Vs. Genetically Engineered Foods
Ding. The bell rings folks signaling the start of round 1. Organic and GE both come out of their corners and start circling, sizing each other up. Las Vegas bookmakers have the odds way in the favor of GE, with Organic getting a +750 from the oddsmakers. They engage, and holy shit, GE knocks out organic with one clean right hook! That wasn’t even close! As far as feeding a world’s population goes, organic is not a sustainable method of farming. If all of the existing farmland on the earth was instantly converted to organic farming methods we could only feed 2/3 of the current world population. Don’t forget that next year there will be an additional 80 million mouths to feed. In reality, with what we currently have, there is a cap on what size of population it will support. As long as people aren’t lining up and volunteering to die, methods of food creation need to advance.
If you want to eat organic, go right ahead. You have that free choice. But be aware there is no real difference between GE and organic as far as taste or health goes. In multiple blindfold taste tests people can’t tell the difference. Eating organic only feeds ego and image. There is no scientific evidence out there right now that GE foods are bad for you or are unhealthy in any way. But for the sake of argument, lets look at the myth of GE foods being bad for you a little bit closer shall we? It won’t hurt anything to investigate it a little bit further…
Myth: GE Foods Are Bad For You And Not Tested
This is one of the most absurd yet most common arguments environmentalists make when discussing modified foods. Genetically modified crops are one of the most tested foods on the market today. Before any GE crop can be sold commercially it must pass testing by the EPA, the USDA, and the FDA. Millions of dollars worth and many years of testing has to be done and passed before anything can become a commercial crop. The myth of animal genes being used in GE crops is completely false. There are no animal genes used in any commercially available genetically modified products. It is tested in laboratories to help scientists understand what is happening, but none of that has ever been introduced outside of a laboratory.
It’s a fact that every food you eat today is modified in some form or another from what it was 10,000 years ago. Techniques like grafting and selective breeding make things better and have been used on every food on the planet today. Every attempted improvement over centuries of time have already changed the DNA of all the edible commercially harvested plants. Like it or not, you eat this stuff all the time on a daily basis. To date, there have not been people born with crazy mutations due to these foods. If this stuff was going to happen, it would have done so by now.
The government is not going to allow unsafe foods into the market. Conspiracy theories aside, the people in government have families too, and do actually care if the food is safe or not to consume. Being irresponsible and not testing the shit out of this stuff affects everyone, including government officials. Everybody has to eat. Think about it… If we can’t trust the people testing our food for safety than we’re all already doomed. They’re not going to have secret organic farms just for top government officials. That’s a ridiculous notion to think. All of the negative hype is just lies and nothing more. On top of all this, hybrid plants produce more food per acre, need less water, less insecticides, and have improved nutrition all for less cost. What is there to not love about that?
Scientific GE Food Advances Save Countless Lives
Why is anyone fighting food advancement these days? Only a teeny tiny portion of the worlds population has the luxury of being able to turn down food. Throughout history there has never been an abundance of food worldwide, and until that day comes, we all can’t afford to be picky with what we all choose to eat. It’s morally wrong to spread falsehoods that will end up killing other people. Is it fair to sacrifice human life because some people think that science can’t handle the responsibility of safely modifying the crops we all consume and trusting governments for testing it to be safe? Personally, I don’t think so.
As usual, with most subjects I’m covering, there is an element to it that really fucking pisses me off, and this one is no different. Some of the struggling countries out there like Zambia with all these starving people are, from the encouragement of environmentalists, actually turning down tons and tons of GE foods that are donated to them thus allowing their people to wither away, starve, and die. So what we have here is people literally fucking dying because of false myths surrounding the GMO’s spread by Greenpeace and the like. I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again. Stop the madness!! Stop the insanity!!! These are human lives for crying out loud!
Concerns that GE foods are an environmental disaster waiting to happen is urban legend. These scientific advances should be used to feed the world and embraced. Why is it that science and technology always look to move us forward, but environmentalists want to take us back to the stone age? What was sustainable 1000 years ago, just isn’t sustainable today. The fact is this stuff is pretty easy to protest when your not hungry. It’s not fair to sacrifice others for something someone may think is right or wrong and not based on any sort of fact whatsoever. Stop fighting progress and GE foods, and fight for something like saving impoverished people from starving. It will be a much more productive use of your time and efforts, and you might just save a life, or two, or like Norman Borlaug, a billion along the way and the world will thank you for it.
